6am repeat :: derek howe // ‘goodbye rock ‘n roll’

6am Repeat is a recurring feature here at Folk Hive in which we stream the latest track that plays incessantly in the earbuds when we awake at that hour and imbibe massive amounts of coffee and cigarettes in preparation for the advancing day.  Consider it your jam of the day — a sweet, sweet gift from me to you.  I love you, dude.

Jason Isbell recommended this yesterday and so today, we recommend it to fans of Americana and those who miss the classic days of country. Those who know The Ryman is hallowed ground. Those who actually know what corn liquor is.

The liner notes of this record reads like a badass listing of badasses. Emmylou’s double bass player and drummer, upright piano from a dude who’s played with the B-52s, BR5-49’s steel guitarist, Jerry Douglas’ violinist, Lyle Lovett’s harmonica man, and Hank Jr’s pedal steel player. And Isbell, too. He played on this. JESUS.
