6am Repeat is a recurring feature here at Folk Hive in which we stream the latest track that plays incessantly in the earbuds when we awake at that hour and imbibe massive amounts of coffee and cigarettes in preparation for the advancing day. Consider it your jam of the day — a sweet, sweet gift from me to you. I love you, dude.
Do not let the dude up there who looks to have clad himself in dress slacks fool you, for this is not a dress slacks kind of band and this is certainly not a dress slacks kind of jam. It’s too dirty for fancy pants.
Here in the house there is an appreciation for all things John Mellencamp. He is underrated and that pisses me off and it’s likely that I’m the only late-20s-something that digs the hell out of him (both old Cougar and new Mellencamp) but it’s in my blood. My mother worships the man, my father is in love with his violinist — when we see ol’ Johnny Cougar live, my dad will get up and actually dance when she plays, which is all at once awkward and awesome as hell.
It goes without saying that I don’t like anyone fucking with my Mellencamp but this? This I can abide. Also of interest to anyone who digs the shit out of some serious blues garage rock like I, the Pure Lust EP. Take note.
