6am repeat :: liam o’brien ‘pyrite’

6am Repeat is a recurring feature here at Folk Hive in which we stream the latest track that plays incessantly in the earbuds when we awake at that hour and imbibe massive amounts of coffee and cigarettes in preparation for the advancing day.

Liam O’Brien’s Faithless comes on recommendation from Mr. Jacob Wright (why do I keep calling this dude Mr.?!) and frankly, after spending the week memorizing every banjo strum and lyric of his, I take his word for it when he says something’s worth my time.  You should too.

I spent the last eve, braving hail the size of miniature stars, lightning uncharacteristic of November, and FUCKING TORNADOES MOTHER NATURE WTF?!, listening to Faithless and it kept me calm, cool, and enthralled.  Whistling, ships, beautiful simple background voices, mandolin, viola.  And there goes my heart, sailing off on the seas with Liam’s voice…

To say that I’m excited for the (hopefully) forthcoming 7″ split from O’Brien and Wright is an understatement.  In all honesty, this release is pretty fucking fantastic — it feel homey enough that it’s possible it was recorded in your own living room and yet, there’s quite a bit there to ruminate on.

In short, keep your eye on these men.  Keep it on them close…
